Breakwaters and Rock Structures

Design of breakwaters and revetments is one of our core competencies, and we have been involved in numerous large breakwater projects both nationally and internationally, including large breakwaters in the Mediterranean, Indian Ocean, North Atlantic and some of the largest and most exposed breakwaters in Denmark. We also have many years of experience in the design of more traditional breakwaters and rock revetments in marinas, scour protection in ferry berths, and much more. We assist both clients and contractors in all project phases, from early concept development to detailed design and the construction phase. We utilise a variety of tools such as numerical wave, current, and sediment transport models (MIKE 21 and MIKE 3) to determine design conditions, as well as our own developed tools to create and build a deep understanding of the project and the physical processes at play that can affect the breakwater. We take great pride in involving all project stakeholders and parties, as well as in creating a common understanding of goals, criteria, technical aspects, and economic and time-critical factors.

Consultancy on breakwaters and rock structures

Owners consultancy

Project development, project requirement specification, stakeholder engagement, preparation of construction cost estimates and maintenance budgets, tendering and contracting, etc.

Concept development

Development and review of breakwater concepts to find the most optimal design, e.g., traditional breakwater with an armour layer of rock, single-layer concrete blocks (Cubipod, Accropode, or Xbloc), or vertical breakwater (caissons).

Numerical modeling

Met-ocean studies to determine extreme wave and water level conditions for the design of the breakwater. Optimisation of breakwater alignments and port layout using wave disturbance and sediment transport models etc.

Design and tender

We have extensive experience and expertise in the detailed design of breakwaters and rock structures, including planning and documentation using physical model tests. Preparation of drawings, technical specifications and tender documents.

Authority approvals

General guidance on applicable rules and legislation, input to environmental impact assessments (EIA), etc.
